Lahore High Court judge recuses himself from hearing bail plea of Libya boat tragedy suspect

A Lahore High Court judge has recused himself from hearing the post-arrest bail petition of a suspect in the Libya boat tragedy case.

Justice Ghulam Sarwar Nehang was hearing the bail petition filed by suspect Shafaqat Ali when he said he had previously served as a member of the commission constituted to investigate the Libya boat tragedy.

The judge said it would therefore not be appropriate for him to hear the bail petition in a case related to the incident.

The court subsequently sent the case file to the Lahore High Court chief justice for further proceedings.

During the hearing, the defence counsel argued that the suspect had already been granted bail in several similar cases and requested the court to release him on bail until the trial court reaches a decision.
