Pakistan close in on series-levelling win against West Indies

Pakistan’s spinners put the team on course for a series-levelling win as the West Indies slipped to 103-6, holding a lead of just 60 runs on an eventful third day of the second and final Test in Trinidad on Tuesday.

Abdullah Shafique’s unbeaten 160 helped Pakistan reach 387 in their first innings, but West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican claimed six wickets as the hosts fought back on the third day of the second Test in Trinidad.

Pakistan, who resumed on 266-2, lost their final eight wickets for 106 runs, with captain Babar Azam dismissed for 88 after being run out while attempting a single. West Indies opener Brandon King suffered back spasms while completing the run-out and was taken from the field for treatment.

Warrican struck three times in four balls late in the innings to finish with 6-112, while Sajid Khan and Shafique added 59 for the seventh wicket before Jayden Seales dismissed Khan for 30.

Pakistan’s spinners then took control as West Indies slipped to 103-6, with Sajid Khan claiming four wickets and Ali Usman taking two. Captain Roston Chase was caught and bowled by Usman from the final delivery of the day.

Justin Greaves, who top-scored in the first innings, remained unbeaten as West Indies ended the day with a lead of 60 runs. The hosts will need to build a substantially bigger advantage on a deteriorating pitch offering sharp turn and uneven bounce.

West Indies bowling coach Ravi Rampaul praised Warrican’s performance but said the hosts would need a lead of around 150 runs to remain in contention.
