Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has announced plans to march towards Islamabad on September 23 after five rounds of talks with the government failed to produce an agreement on its demands.
The party said thousands of workers and vehicles from different parts of the country would join the planned march. Caravans from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other regions are expected to travel towards the federal capital.
The party said its protest campaign was focused on public issues and was not aimed at electioneering or pursuing any other political objective.
The main demand of the protest is the withdrawal of the petroleum levy, which the party says has increased the financial burden on citizens already facing inflation and rising living costs.
The party has called for immediate relief for consumers and urged the government to reduce its own expenditure instead of imposing additional financial burdens on the public.
After five rounds of negotiations with the government, the party has decided not to hold further talks and said its protest movement would continue until the petroleum levy is withdrawn.
Thousands of vehicles from Malakand division are also expected to leave from Chakdara on September 23 to join the planned march in Islamabad.
The party has said the protest will remain peaceful and that its workers will not target state institutions. However, it has indicated that protesters could enter the Islamabad Red Zone and continue their sit-in if directed by the party leadership.
The party has also criticised rising fuel and electricity prices, saying they have increased the cost of living and contributed to higher prices of essential commodities.
The protest movement is aimed at pressing the government to withdraw the petroleum levy and provide relief to consumers facing increasing economic pressures.
