The British and US leaders discussed Ukraine, trade and the status of the Falkland Islands during their meeting, with both sides signalling an interest in maintaining close bilateral relations.
The British prime minister said the relationship between the two countries remained important and expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation.
Managing ties with Washington remains a key foreign policy challenge for the UK government as differences have emerged over several international issues, including US foreign policy in the Middle East.
The meeting also addressed the status of Diego Garcia and the wider Chagos Islands dispute.
The United States has criticised Britain’s agreement with Mauritius to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos Islands while allowing the UK to retain a 99-year lease over Diego Garcia, which hosts a strategically important military facility.
Implementation of the agreement has been delayed amid US opposition. The British government has previously said it remains committed to finding a resolution to the issue.
The two countries continue to engage on defence, trade and foreign policy matters despite differences over the agreement and other international issues.
