Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has shortened his visit to New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly, with Israeli media reporting that security officials advised against an overnight stay following recent security briefings.
According to Israeli reports, security officials presented Netanyahu with what was described as an intelligence assessment containing specific warnings. The nature of those warnings has not been publicly disclosed.
Under the revised schedule, Netanyahu is expected to travel from Israel to New York, address the UN General Assembly on Thursday and return to Israel the same day. The 81st General Assembly’s high-level general debate is taking place from Sept. 22 to 26, with an additional session on Sept. 28.
The shortened visit follows the cancellation of a planned stop in Texas for a meeting with Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The revised itinerary also leaves little room for diplomatic meetings, with current reports indicating that no meeting with US President Donald Trump is scheduled.
Netanyahu’s brief stay comes as New York prepares for heightened security measures and demonstrations linked to Israel’s military operations and policies in the Palestinian territories. His visit has also been accompanied by public exchanges with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the Gaza conflict and Netanyahu’s planned UN address.
Netanyahu is expected to use his UN speech to defend Israel’s military actions and respond to international criticism. Meanwhile, footage circulating online showing diplomats leaving during a Netanyahu UN speech should not be presented as footage from his 2026 appearance; the widely shared video is from his address to the 80th General Assembly in September 2025.
With the revised itinerary, Netanyahu’s trip is expected to focus primarily on his UN appearance, followed by an immediate return to Israel without an overnight stay.
