Pakistan’s renowned and historic beverage company, Murree Brewery, has resumed exports of alcoholic beverages after nearly five decades.
According to foreign media reports, Murree Brewery has started shipping beer and other alcoholic beverages to several countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Portugal and Thailand.
The company’s Export Manager, Rameez Shah, said that alcoholic beverages were exported to these countries during April.
Murree Brewery was granted permission by the Government of Pakistan in 2025 to export alcoholic products to countries that are not members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Prior to this, the company had been exporting other products, including juice, mineral water and non-alcoholic malt beverages, to international markets for several years.
According to reports, strict restrictions on alcohol in Pakistan following 1977 had also led to the suspension of Murree Brewery’s overseas sales of alcoholic products. Following the new permission, the company has once again begun introducing its alcoholic products to the international market after nearly 50 years.
Murree Brewery officials said that, in the initial phase, the company is focusing on strengthening its overseas distributors and distribution network, after which the volume of exports will gradually be increased.
Reports said the government introduced the change in export policy at a time when Pakistan was seeking new sources of foreign exchange. The move has enabled Murree Brewery to access markets in non-OIC countries.
Murree Brewery is considered one of Pakistan’s oldest industrial companies. The company was established during the British colonial era in the 1860s, and its main production facility is located in Rawalpindi.
