World No. 10 Ben Shelton advanced to the Montreal Masters quarter-finals with a straight-sets victory over Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, maintaining his perfect record of reaching the last eight without dropping a set.
The 23-year-old American will face 13th-seeded Czech Jakub Mensik in the quarter-finals. Mensik defeated Botic Van De Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5.
Fonseca struggled with 32 unforced errors and appeared to hurt his ankle after landing awkwardly while attempting a smash in the second set. Shelton secured his ninth consecutive victory in Canada after the Brazilian failed to convert leads in both sets.
Spain’s Daniel Merida also reached the quarter-finals after defeating Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1. The victory extended Merida’s hardcourt winning streak to four matches and guarantees the world No. 63 a career-best ranking inside the top 50.
Merida will face American 12th seed Learner Tien, who beat Argentina’s Thiago Tirante 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard, who had previously struggled on hardcourts, has now won 16 matches during his breakthrough season.
At the WTA Toronto Masters, world No. 2 Elena Rybakina overcame a major challenge from Liudmila Samsonova, recovering from 3-0 and two breaks down in the deciding set to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Rybakina will meet four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals. Osaka defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4.
Fourth-seeded Coco Gauff advanced comfortably with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Russian qualifier Alina Korneeva. Gauff, who has not dropped a set in Toronto, will face Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, who defeated Alexandra Eala 6-4, 6-0.
The victory marked Gauff’s first Toronto quarter-final appearance since 2023, while Osaka reached the last eight after breaking Fernandez once in each set.
