A Palestinian man was killed and two others were seriously wounded after Israeli forces opened fire on a vehicle in Bani Naim, near the southern West Bank city of Hebron, according to Palestinian officials.
Images from the scene showed a blue body bag lying on the road beside a vehicle whose windows appeared to have been damaged by gunfire.
The Israeli military said a vehicle carrying three people accelerated toward an Israeli military vehicle and struck it in the Bani Naim area. It said no Israeli personnel were injured and that troops opened fire after the incident, with several hits recorded on the vehicle.
The Palestinian General Authority for Civil Affairs said Israeli forces fired on a civilian vehicle near the entrance to Bani Naim. It identified the man killed as 38-year-old Hossam Alaa al-Din Abdul Jabbar Walid Ali and said two other young men were seriously wounded.
The Palestinian authority did not provide further details on whether the occupants of the vehicle had attempted to ram Israeli forces.
Separate incident near Ramallah
In a separate incident near Ramallah, Israeli forces were deployed to the Ramun area following reports of a vehicle being set on fire and two suspected attackers being present, one of whom was allegedly carrying a knife.
The Israeli military said the individual carrying the knife was “neutralised” by an Israeli civilian, without explaining how the term was being used.
Palestinian officials said Ahmad Mazen Kahla was critically wounded by Israeli gunfire in the area.
Meanwhile, prosecutors in Israel said an Israeli university professor has been indicted over allegations that he planned attacks targeting hundreds of Arab Israelis and Palestinians in an effort to force them to flee to neighbouring countries.
The suspect, who is in his 60s, lives in Petah Tikva in central Israel and teaches mathematics at Bar-Ilan University, according to a summary of the indictment. Prosecutors did not disclose his identity. He was arrested around two weeks ago.
Authorities allege that the professor began developing the plan in February 2023 with the aim of killing hundreds of Arab citizens of Israel, as well as Palestinians in annexed East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, citing nationalist and ideological motives.
According to prosecutors, the alleged plan involved 72 Jewish attackers organised into 12 cells and armed with rifles, pistols, axes and hammers. The groups were allegedly intended to carry out mass attacks in mixed cities and Arab communities.
