US President Donald Trump has expressed uncertainty over whether he will receive the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, saying the Norwegian Nobel Committee has a history of overlooking candidates like him.
“I don’t know what their decision is going to be,” Trump said while referring to the 2026 award, which the Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce on Friday.
“They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me,” he added.
Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his diplomatic efforts and involvement in resolving international conflicts.
“It is about that time,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He also referred to what he described as an indirect recognition he received previously, saying the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize had stated that “nobody in history deserves it more than President Trump.”
Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado presented her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump in January while seeking US backing for her political efforts in Venezuela.
Trump has argued that he deserves the award after becoming involved in efforts to resolve eight conflicts since taking office.
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, although the claims could not be independently verified.
Trump’s diplomatic role in some of the conflicts he has claimed to have helped resolve has been disputed by parties involved. Fighting has also resumed in some areas, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Trump has also failed to secure a resolution to Russia’s war in Ukraine, despite his campaign promise to end the conflict shortly after returning to office.
Meanwhile, US-Israeli military strikes on Iran have contributed to a months-long conflict that has disrupted global energy supplies and pushed up gas prices ahead of the US midterm elections.
Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court and the UN special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories are among those considered possible contenders for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
