Scottish FA withdraws support for FIFA president Infantino

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, becoming the latest European football body to oppose his re-election bid.

SFA Chief Executive Ian Maxwell said on Monday that Scotland would not vote for Infantino at the upcoming FIFA Congress, adding that the decision was in line with the position taken by UEFA.

England, Ireland and Wales are among the other European associations that have also withdrawn their backing for Infantino.

Infantino is facing growing pressure after three football confederations accused him of “deception” over his proposed private-investor World Cup plan in an open letter issued last week.

SFA President Mike Mulraney currently serves as chairman of FIFA’s finance committee.

Maxwell also called for greater transparency and stronger governance within FIFA, saying there had been insufficient engagement with member associations.

He said the organisation needed to review its approach to governance and transparency, adding that the details of any reforms remained open to discussion.
