NEPRA receives request to raise electricity tariff by Rs2.52 per unit nationwide

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase of Rs2.52 per unit in electricity tariffs across the country.

According to NEPRA, the request has been filed under the fuel price adjustment for July.

The CPPA stated that electricity generated from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) cost Rs47.37 per unit in July, with LNG-based power generation amounting to Rs77.19 billion. LNG accounted for 10.78 per cent of total electricity generation during the month.

The request said furnace oil accounted for 1.42pc of electricity generation, with the cost of generation standing at Rs50.07 per unit. Power worth Rs10.77bn was generated from furnace oil.

Hydropower contributed 39.81pc of total generation, while local coal and imported coal accounted for 10.91pc and 14.38pc, respectively.

Nuclear sources contributed 10.10pc of electricity generation, with fuel costs averaging Rs3.02 per unit.

The CPPA also reported electricity generation from diesel in July. Around 31 million units were generated from diesel at a cost of Rs54.47 per unit.

NEPRA will hold a hearing on the tariff adjustment request on August 27. If approved, the proposed increase is expected to impose an additional burden of around Rs41 billion, including GST, on electricity consumers.
