Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani arrived in Islamabad on Thursday for a two-day official visit, the Foreign Office (FO) said.
The FO shared pictures of the visiting minister’s arrival on social media platform X, saying he was received by the ministry’s Additional Secretary for the Middle East.
During his visit, the two sides are expected to hold detailed discussions on bilateral relations, explore ways to strengthen cooperation and exchange views on regional and international developments.
The FO said the visit would mark an important step towards further strengthening relations and cooperation between Pakistan and Syria.
Al-Shaibani’s visit is the first by a Syrian foreign minister to Pakistan since Walid al-Mouallem visited Islamabad in May 2007. It is also the first such visit since the change of government in Damascus following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in 2024.
The visit comes a day after Pakistan strongly condemned what it described as an “unprovoked” Israeli attack on a Syrian airbase, warning that such actions could further undermine regional peace and stability.
According to Syrian state-run television Ekhbariya, Israel carried out eight airstrikes on the runway and storage facilities at the Abu al-Duhur military base near Aleppo in northwestern Syria. Syrian sources said no casualties were reported in the strikes.
The Foreign Office described the Israeli action as a “flagrant violation of international law” and said it could further threaten peace and stability in the region.
Pakistan also reaffirmed its solidarity with the Syrian people and reiterated support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace and prosperity.
