Pakistan-US Relations Enter a New Phase Amid Renewed Cooperation

Upcoming talks between Pakistan and the United States on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly are expected to focus on expanding bilateral relations across economic, technological, security and diplomatic areas.

The discussions come amid increased engagement between the two countries and growing interest in developing a broader and more consistent framework for cooperation.

Pakistan’s geographical position linking South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East, along with its access to the Arabian Sea, gives it strategic importance for regional connectivity, trade and security.

With a population of more than 250 million, Pakistan also represents a significant consumer market and source of human capital. Its potential mineral resources and access to Central Asian markets could provide opportunities for expanded trade and investment.

Pakistan has also sought to play a diplomatic role in addressing regional conflicts and tensions, adding another dimension to its engagement with international partners.

Pakistan and the United States have maintained diplomatic relations since 1947 and have cooperated on several major international and regional issues.

The two countries worked closely during the Cold War, while Pakistan also played a role in facilitating contacts between the United States and China during the early 1970s.

Pakistan later became an important partner in international efforts following the September 11 attacks and incurred significant human and economic costs during the subsequent campaign against terrorism.

Despite periods of close cooperation, bilateral relations have also experienced interruptions and shifts in priorities. Greater continuity and broader institutional engagement have been identified as important factors in developing a more stable relationship.

Potential areas of sustained engagement include strategic dialogue, parliamentary exchanges, economic consultations, business-to-business investment, educational and scientific cooperation, diplomatic contacts and people-to-people exchanges.

Economic and Technology Cooperation

Economic cooperation is expected to remain a major area of potential growth in Pakistan-US relations, particularly in trade, investment, technology and industrial development.

Pakistan’s mineral resources, including critical minerals, could create opportunities for cooperation in supply chains, processing, technology transfer and manufacturing.

Other areas with potential for increased collaboration include information technology, artificial intelligence, agriculture, energy, advanced manufacturing, healthcare and digital services.

Pakistan’s young population and expanding technology sector could also provide opportunities for international companies seeking new markets, skilled workers and cost-competitive production facilities.

Security Cooperation

Security and counterterrorism cooperation remain important components of bilateral relations. Pakistan continues to face militant threats and has undertaken extensive security operations against terrorist organisations.

The two countries have expressed interest in strengthening cooperation against terrorism, improving border security and enhancing counterterrorism capabilities.

Broader security cooperation could also contribute to regional stability and create conditions for increased trade, investment and economic connectivity.

Both countries have shared interests in promoting stability in South Asia, improving connectivity with Central Asia and supporting greater regional economic integration.

The evolving situation in Afghanistan is also expected to remain relevant to regional security discussions, particularly regarding terrorism and cross-border threats.

Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement with countries that have strained relations with the United States could provide another avenue for cooperation, particularly in efforts aimed at dialogue and regional stability.

The upcoming engagement provides an opportunity for Pakistan and the United States to explore a broader framework for long-term cooperation, with greater emphasis on economic growth, technology, security, diplomacy and regional connectivity.
