Chinese AI Firm DeepSeek to Brief UN Security Council on AI

The 15-member United Nations Security Council is set to meet on Wednesday to discuss artificial intelligence and its implications for international security, amid growing concerns over the rapid development of increasingly powerful AI systems.

Chinese AI companies, including DeepSeek and other leading developers, have been invited to address the meeting. The founder of one of the companies is not expected to attend, although participation plans remain subject to change.

The meeting comes weeks after several technology industry leaders called for greater coordination and caution in developing advanced AI systems. They warned that increasingly capable models could eventually become difficult for humans to control.

The session will also include participation from senior representatives of major US AI companies, with discussions expected to focus on the security implications of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence.

The Security Council first held a dedicated discussion on AI-related risks in 2023. At the time, members highlighted concerns over the potential misuse of the technology, including its possible use for censorship, repression and other security-related threats.

The UN has continued to raise concerns over the rapid pace of AI development, warning that its potential risks require international attention and coordinated safeguards. The debate has also highlighted differences between countries over how AI development should be regulated.

Chinese officials and state media have rejected calls for slowing AI development, arguing that such proposals could be aimed at restricting technological competition and limiting China’s role in global AI governance.

Unlike some leading US AI companies, Chinese AI developers have generally made fewer public statements about scenarios in which highly capable AI systems could deceive humans, evade safeguards or cause severe harm.

The Security Council meeting comes as US and Chinese officials prepare for further discussions on AI safety. Both sides have agreed to continue talks on the issue amid broader diplomatic engagement between Washington and Beijing.
