Trump to Conclude Xi Summit With Visit to US Archives

US President Donald Trump is set to conclude Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Washington with a tour of the US National Archives, where the two leaders are expected to view historical documents highlighting the long-standing relationship between the United States and China.

The visit follows a high-profile White House summit between Trump and Xi, where discussions focused on trade and artificial intelligence. While Trump highlighted progress under the two countries’ bilateral trade arrangements, no major breakthrough was publicly announced on several contentious issues.

Trump said Xi would be shown key US historical documents, including the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The National Archives visit is also expected to highlight historical ties and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Taiwan remained a key issue in the US-China talks. Xi urged Washington to handle the Taiwan issue with caution and called for the United States to maintain what Beijing describes as its position against Taiwan independence.

China has repeatedly opposed US arms sales to Taiwan, while Washington maintains unofficial relations with Taipei and is legally required to provide the island with defensive capabilities.

US lawmakers and regional allies are closely watching how the Trump administration addresses Taiwan following Xi’s visit. China has sought greater restrictions on US military support for Taiwan, while US officials have continued to discuss the importance of stability across the Taiwan Strait.

Trump highlighted what he described as improved market access for US farmers and ranchers under the bilateral trade framework. Both leaders also identified artificial intelligence as an area where Washington and Beijing could pursue cooperation.

The summit comes as the two countries continue to manage disputes involving trade, technology, strategic resources and security.

The National Archives visit is scheduled to conclude Xi’s state visit to Washington, marking the final public event of his trip.
