A Saudi-led coalition has accused Yemen’s Houthi group of carrying out Tuesday’s drone attack on a power station in Madina, saying an investigation and analysis of recovered drone debris confirmed Houthi involvement.
The coalition said the facility supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque and accused the Houthis of repeatedly attempting to target the Two Holy Mosques.
The Houthis rejected the allegation through their official news agency, calling it a “lie” and accusing Saudi Arabia of using the claim to deflect from an earlier allegation involving an alleged Houthi drone attack near Makkah.
Saudi authorities had previously said they intercepted a Houthi drone south of Makkah before it entered restricted airspace. The Houthis denied targeting Makkah or any other Islamic holy site.
The latest incident marks a significant escalation in tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with cross-border hostilities intensifying after a period of relative calm following a UN-backed truce in 2022.
Saudi Arabia has carried out airstrikes in Yemen while supporting forces opposed to the Houthis, as fighting and tensions continue along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
