Democrats have secured a sweeping victory in the US midterm elections, gaining control of both chambers of Congress and significantly weakening President Donald Trump’s political position.
The victory gives Democrats the power to block legislation, launch investigations into the Trump administration and challenge the president’s judicial and senior government appointments.
The election results reflected widespread voter dissatisfaction over rising living costs, import tariffs and Trump’s military campaign against Iran, which has contributed to soaring fuel prices and mounting economic concerns.
Responding to the results, President Trump said he was willing to accept the election outcome and expressed readiness to work with Democrats. He also acknowledged that the conflict with Iran had contributed to the Republican Party’s poor performance, while defending his administration’s military policies.
However, Trump sought to distance himself from the Republican defeat, insisting that the results should not be viewed as a personal setback.
Democrats made significant gains in traditionally Republican states, including Kansas and Iowa, securing six additional Senate seats and ending decades of Republican dominance in several constituencies.
In Kansas, Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton defeated Republican incumbent Roger Marshall, becoming the first Democrat elected to the Senate from the state since 1932. In Iowa, Democrats also secured a Senate victory, marking their first success in the state since 2008.
The Democratic gains extended to Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio, where several Republican candidates backed by Trump suffered defeats.
In Texas, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican candidate Ken Paxton in the Senate race, while Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott, ending decades of Republican control over the governor’s office.
Democrats also recorded major victories in gubernatorial races. In California, Xavier Becerra defeated Trump-backed Republican candidate Steve Hilton to become the state’s first elected Latino governor.
Meanwhile, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia gubernatorial race, becoming the first Black woman elected governor in US history.
Despite the Republican losses, Trump-backed candidates secured some victories in Florida, where Byron Donalds won the gubernatorial election and Ashley Moody retained her Senate seat.
Democrats also gained control of the House of Representatives after defeating Republican candidates in several districts across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky, Arizona and North Carolina.
The results are expected to significantly reshape Washington’s political landscape when the new Congress takes office in January.
Democratic leaders have indicated that they intend to scrutinise the Trump administration over allegations of corruption, its handling of the Iran conflict and immigration enforcement policies.
House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries described the results as the beginning of a political comeback, while Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff said voters had rejected the Trump administration’s policies.
Economic concerns remained a major factor behind the Democratic victory, as voters expressed frustration over increasing rents, grocery prices, utility bills and property taxes.
According to exit polls, around half of voters viewed the midterm elections as an opportunity to express dissatisfaction with President Trump, while a significant majority called for stronger congressional oversight of the presidency.
The election results mark another setback for the Republican Party, as the president’s party has historically lost congressional seats in most midterm elections since World War II.
Meanwhile, the US Justice Department deployed approximately 1,000 election monitors across all 50 states, describing the operation as the largest Election Day monitoring effort in the country’s history.
The deployment drew criticism from Democrats, who raised concerns about possible voter intimidation. However, election officials in several states reported no major problems associated with the monitoring operation.
