Four flights across Europe faced security disruptions after receiving bomb threats, prompting emergency procedures and aircraft inspections at several airports.
Two of the threats targeted flights bound for Poland’s capital, Warsaw. The aircraft included a Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) flight from Copenhagen and a LOT Polish Airlines flight departing from London’s Heathrow Airport.
In a separate incident, Spanish airport operator Aena confirmed that emergency protocols were activated following a bomb alert aboard a Ryanair flight travelling from Manchester, in northwestern England, to Murcia in southeastern Spain.
Meanwhile, a Wizz Air aircraft arriving from Bergamo, Italy, was subjected to security checks after landing in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, at 0910 GMT, according to a spokesperson for the Bulgarian Interior Ministry.
The incidents followed another security alert on Monday, when a Wizz Air flight travelling from London Luton Airport to Sofia was diverted to Budapest after receiving a bomb threat. Fighter jets were also scrambled in response to the incident.
The Ryanair flight landed safely in Murcia, and Spain’s Civil Guard deactivated the emergency protocol after completing security checks.
Scandinavian Airlines confirmed that a threat had been made against flight SK751 from Copenhagen to Warsaw. The aircraft landed safely at Warsaw Chopin Airport, where one runway was temporarily closed while security personnel inspected the plane. No explosives were discovered.
The LOT flight, which was also scheduled to land at Chopin Airport, was diverted to Warsaw Modlin Airport. The airport was temporarily closed following the alert, but the Boeing 737 MAX landed safely.
Modlin Airport spokesperson Adam Szablowski said passengers were evacuated and the aircraft was searched, with no explosives found. He added that the airport had since resumed normal operations.
Hungary’s Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi said that NATO’s air defence alert service had issued a warning on Monday concerning the Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia.
