Pakistan and Wales draw 3-3 in FIH World Cup match

Pakistan and Wales played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in their Pool D match at the FIH World Cup, with…

The first of the three-Test series between Pakistan and England will begin at Headingley on Wednesday, with Babar Azam’s participation still uncertain due to a finger injury. Babar is awaiting clearance from the medical team after injuring his right hand during the second Test against the West Indies earlier this month. He was struck again while batting in Pakistan’s warm-up match against the Professional County Club Select XI at Beckenham last week and retired hurt. Although the Pakistan Cricket Board had described his withdrawal as precautionary, his fitness remains a concern ahead of the opening Test. Babar took part in a brief net session during Pakistan’s first training session at Headingley. However, no decision has been made on whether he will play or lead the team. Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas told reporters that Babar’s participation would be decided on match day after considering medical advice. Babar’s absence could force changes to Pakistan’s middle order and leave the team without its regular Test captain. Saud Shakeel, who missed the West Indies series, is expected to return after scoring a century in the Beckenham warm-up. Mohammad Awais Zafar could also retain his place if Babar is ruled out. The captaincy could also become an issue. Babar replaced Shan Masood as Test captain at the start of the West Indies series, while Salman Ali Agha led Pakistan in the Beckenham warm-up in Babar’s absence. Meanwhile, Pakistan received positive news regarding Shan Masood, who returned to training after recovering from a fractured finger sustained during the first Test against the West Indies. Shan missed the second Test and the Beckenham warm-up but completed the entire training session in Leeds on Monday. Abbas said the opener looked in good shape, although the final decision would depend on medical advice. Pakistan head into the series with confidence after beating the West Indies in the second Test to level their two-match series 1-1. England, meanwhile, are beginning a new era following Ben Stokes’ retirement and Brendon McCullum’s departure as head coach. Joe Root has returned as captain, while Stephen Fleming has been appointed head coach, with his tenure set to begin later this year. Abbas said Pakistan were focused on their own preparations and hoped to build on their recent victory. The series is part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship. The second Test will be played at Lord’s from August 27 to 31, while the third Test is scheduled for Edgbaston from September 9 to 13.
