Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that SpaceX has donated 50 Starlink satellite internet kits to the country to strengthen communications during natural disasters and other emergencies.
The donation was announced following a meeting between Anwar and a SpaceX delegation in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital.
According to the prime minister, the discussions also covered expanding Starlink’s satellite internet services, particularly in remote and underserved communities.
Anwar said Starlink was supporting Malaysia’s JENDELA digital infrastructure programme, which aims to improve internet coverage and service quality in areas including Sabah and Sarawak as well as Orang Asli settlements in Peninsular Malaysia.
He also welcomed the operation of Starlink’s Point of Presence (PoP) facility in Cyberjaya, saying the infrastructure would help route local data traffic more efficiently and improve connectivity for users.
Anwar stressed that technological development should deliver practical benefits to the public, while highlighting the importance of cybersecurity, data protection and responsible internet use.
Malaysia has increasingly relied on satellite-based connectivity to provide internet access to communities in locations where traditional telecommunications infrastructure remains difficult to establish.
