Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, has praised Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability through mediation, dialogue and diplomacy, according to the Foreign Office (FO).
The archbishop is visiting Pakistan to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and the Holy See.
In a statement, the FO said Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received Archbishop Gallagher at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Welcoming the visiting dignitary, Dar acknowledged the Holy See’s contributions to promoting peace, interfaith harmony and dialogue. He also appreciated the valuable role of Pakistan’s Catholic community, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare.
According to the FO, Archbishop Gallagher commended Pakistan’s efforts to advance regional peace and stability through diplomatic engagement and mediation.
During the meeting, Dar appreciated Pope Leo XIV’s principled calls for peace and a just resolution of the Palestinian conflict. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Both sides expressed deep concern over the continuing humanitarian crisis and underscored the need for sustained international efforts to promote peace in the region.
The FO said the two sides reiterated their commitment to strengthening relations between Pakistan and the Holy See while fostering mutual respect, understanding and peaceful coexistence among different faiths.
The Foreign Office said Archbishop Gallagher is also expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his visit.
The visiting dignitary is further expected to interact with members of Pakistan’s Catholic community.
The visit marks a significant milestone in the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and the Holy See, reflecting their shared commitment to expanding cooperation, strengthening mutual trust and promoting interfaith harmony and peace.
