Maryam Nawaz criticises PPP, PTI over political opposition

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has criticised the PPP and PTI, accusing the former of corruption and the latter of creating political unrest.

Speaking at the inauguration of a cardiac transplant centre at the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology on Friday, she urged both parties to follow the PML-N’s approach and focus on public service.

“One party is involved in corruption and the other in anarchy,” Ms Nawaz said.

Her remarks come amid growing tensions between the PML-N and PPP, which have intensified criticism of the federal and Punjab governments over governance and alleged electoral irregularities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The latest exchange has highlighted strains within the ruling coalition, with PPP leaders repeatedly accusing the PML-N of benefiting from a “Form-47 mandate”, while PML-N figures have hit back by questioning the PPP’s governance record.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has also criticised the PPP over its remarks on the Punjab government’s performance, saying critics of the province’s development would not derail the government’s public-service agenda.

The PPP, meanwhile, has rejected the PML-N’s criticism and questioned its political legitimacy. Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon recently accused the PML-N of coming to power through a “fake mandate”.

The PTI has made similar allegations since the February 2024 general elections, claiming that the results were manipulated to deprive the party of seats and enable the formation of PML-N-led governments.

The escalating rhetoric comes despite the PPP and PML-N continuing to cooperate at the federal level, with their political differences becoming increasingly pronounced, particularly in Punjab and Sindh.
