Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro has reportedly secured a Guinness World Record after surviving a drop from more than 100,000 feet during an unusual high-altitude experiment.
According to reports, the device was placed in RhinoShield’s newly developed Air-X protective case and carried by a balloon into the stratosphere above Kiruna, Sweden.
The iPhone was released from an altitude of 100,418 feet (30,607 metres), more than three times the typical cruising altitude of commercial passenger aircraft.
The device remained airborne for approximately 25 minutes as temperatures fell to as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius. The experiment was conducted without a parachute, heating system or specialised landing cushion.
The phone eventually landed in a frozen lake in a remote and difficult-to-reach area. A search and rescue team recovered it about five hours later.
A RhinoShield spokesperson said the iPhone was found in full working condition. The device reportedly had no visible scratches on its screen or body, remained powered on and was still capable of making calls.
