ania Aamir on Tuesday spoke up about the all-too-familiar and — unfortunately — quintessentially Pakistani experience of moving from tragedy to tragedy with little respite or resolution.
In an emotional Instagram story, Aamir wrote: “There is something deeply frightening about how quickly we are being forced to move from one tragedy, one injustice, to the next.”
The comments accompanied a video purportedly showing police disrupting a on Sunday for the recovery of Pakistani sailors who had been taken hostage by Somali pirates in April this year.
Before Pakistanis can grieve one tragedy, there is another, Aamir wrote, adding that “somewhere in that cycle, accountability disappears”.
“How much more are we expected to witness before something actually changes?“ she questioned.
Aamir shared the story a day after some family members of the hostages claimed to have been by police on the morning of a planned march. Police, however, asserted they had “engaged” with the protestors and tried to get them to vacate their protest site near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs liaison office. They also denied dispersing protestors with force.
Alongside the family members of the Pakistani sailors, prominent celebrities such as Mahira Khan, Sabeena Farooq and Talha Anjum have also the safe recovery of the hostages.
Despite numerous protests over the past five months, however, no significant progress has been made as yet.
Since the sailors were taken hostage, the crew has appeared in several videos, appealing to the government of Pakistan for their release and reporting that they have run out of necessities like clean water, food as well as medicine.
Their abductors have demanded a $3 million ransom to release the crew and cargo.
