Pakistan assumes presidency of UN Conference on Disarmament

Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament, with Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Tahir Hussain Andrabi, chairing the conference’s proceedings.

According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Pakistan will complete the annual proceedings of the conference as the final president of its 2026 session. Under Pakistan’s presidency, discussions will also be held on the conference’s annual report and a related resolution in the UN General Assembly’s First Committee.

The spokesperson said Ambassador Andrabi had begun consultations in his capacity as conference president. He chaired a meeting of the 2026 presidents and held consultations with representatives of various regional groups.

The Conference on Disarmament is the world’s sole multilateral forum dedicated to negotiating disarmament and arms-control agreements, the Foreign Office said.

The conference comprises 65 member states, including countries possessing nuclear weapons.

Its agenda includes preventing an arms race in outer space, nuclear disarmament and measures to prevent nuclear war. The conference and its predecessor bodies have also negotiated major international agreements, including the Biological Weapons Convention and Chemical Weapons Convention.

The Foreign Office described Pakistan’s presidency as a reflection of the international community’s confidence in the country’s diplomatic leadership.

It said the presidency would provide Pakistan with an opportunity to play a central role in global discussions on arms control, disarmament, international peace and security.
