Pakistan remained actively engaged in diplomatic efforts at the United Nations General Assembly as world leaders gathered for the 81st session, with the country focusing on efforts to promote dialogue between the United States and Iran.
Pakistan’s prime minister and deputy prime minister held a series of meetings with international leaders as Islamabad continued efforts to support a diplomatic resolution to the conflict between Washington and Tehran, which has affected global trade and energy markets.
The prime minister, who is scheduled to address the General Assembly, was also mentioned during the US president’s address to the session. The US leader credited Pakistan’s leadership with helping efforts to resolve several international conflicts.
Pakistan has continued to encourage Washington and Tehran to maintain indirect contacts and remain open to direct negotiations. These diplomatic efforts have continued amid uncertainty over a possible meeting between the US and Iranian leadership on the sidelines of the UN session.
The US president later confirmed that his team had held a meeting with an Iranian delegation in New York. He described the discussions as productive and said another meeting was expected to take place soon.
Pakistan has also maintained diplomatic contacts with Iran as part of its efforts to facilitate dialogue. Pakistani officials have discussed regional peace and stability with Iranian leadership and other officials during recent engagements.
The United Nations has welcomed Pakistan’s mediation efforts and expressed support for renewed dialogue between the United States and Iran. The UN has maintained that diplomacy and negotiations remain essential to ending the conflict and reducing its humanitarian and economic impact.
Iran has also indicated that its delegation in New York has authority to pursue diplomatic engagement. Tehran has conveyed proposals to Washington through intermediaries, keeping open the possibility of returning to negotiations.
Pakistan’s deputy prime minister participated in a ministerial meeting of the Regional-4 (R-4) group alongside foreign ministers from Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
The group has focused on regional security and diplomatic efforts related to the US-Iran conflict. Participants discussed the latest regional developments and reaffirmed support for a peaceful resolution.
Pakistan reiterated its commitment to the R-4 framework and stressed the importance of continued diplomatic engagement to promote regional peace and stability.
The participating countries also emphasised dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of resolving regional disputes and called for continued implementation of understandings aimed at maintaining peace.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s prime minister held bilateral meetings with several international leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly to discuss regional and international developments.
