Pope Leo Warns AI Could Put Humanity at Risk During France Visit

Pope Leo XIV has warned against allowing rapid advances in artificial intelligence to undermine human dignity and relationships, describing the prospect of a technology-dominated future as a potential “paradise of machines”.

The Pope made the remarks on Friday at the beginning of his four-day visit to France, where artificial intelligence, human dignity, peace and social issues are among the key themes of his trip.

Addressing concerns surrounding the rapid development of AI, Pope Leo called for technology to remain under human direction and serve the common good rather than become a means of domination or inequality.

His visit includes an appearance at UNESCO in Paris, where he is expected to address the ethical challenges associated with emerging technologies and the need to protect human rights and autonomy in the digital age.

The Vatican has increasingly focused on the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence under Pope Leo. Earlier this month, he called for AI systems to promote peace and unity rather than deepen divisions and conflict.

The Pope has also argued that technological progress should not replace human relationships. In recent remarks, he stressed the importance of viewing humanity as a connected community amid growing reliance on AI and other technologies.

During his France visit, Pope Leo is also expected to address issues including the protection of human life, peace, Europe’s future and the Catholic Church’s response to its clergy abuse crisis.

His trip, scheduled from September 25 to 28, includes visits to Paris and Lourdes as well as meetings with French officials, religious leaders and abuse survivors.

The Pope’s warnings come as governments, technology companies and international organisations debate how artificial intelligence should be developed and regulated while protecting human rights, privacy and individual decision-making.
