Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday directed the inspector general of police to take strict action against corrupt officials and ordered that officers with a reputation for corruption not be appointed as station house officers (SHOs).
Chairing a law and order meeting, the chief minister said maintaining peace and protecting citizens’ lives and property were the government’s top priorities.
She directed police to step up efforts against burglary and launch a targeted operation in Sheikhupura to curb criminal activity.
The chief minister also approved placing the operational control of Dolphin Police under the respective police stations and set September 30 as the deadline for equipping Punjab Police personnel with body cameras.
She called for a comprehensive strategy to tackle crimes against women and children and ordered a zero-tolerance policy against those involved in such offences.
Ms Maryam also approved the installation of GPS trackers and surveillance cameras in prisoner vans and ordered strict action in cases involving the escape of inmates.
The meeting was informed that crime levels across Punjab had declined, with robberies falling by 54 per cent, murders by 35pc, car snatching by 46pc and motorcycle theft by 53pc.
The chief minister said district police officers would be held accountable in areas where crime rates remained high.
