According to monthly data compiled by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), Pakistan recorded 199 terrorist attacks in August, up 38 per cent from 144 incidents reported in July.
Despite the rise in the frequency of attacks, the human toll declined significantly during the month. The attacks in August resulted in 158 deaths and 181 injuries, compared with 268 deaths and 216 injuries recorded in July. Fatalities fell by 41pc, while injuries declined by 16pc.
July had been the deadliest month of 2026, with violence linked to terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations intensifying sharply.
Security forces continued counter-terrorism operations throughout August, resulting in 211 deaths, including 203 terrorists. The operations also left 21 terrorists injured and led to the arrest of 26 suspected militants.
Of the terrorists killed during security operations, 115 were eliminated in Balochistan, 56 in mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 32 in the province’s merged districts.
PICSS recorded three suicide attacks in August, including two vehicle-borne attacks. This marked a significant decline from July, when eight suicide attacks, including five vehicle-borne attacks, were reported — the highest monthly figure in a decade, according to the institute.
Kidnapping incidents also decreased by 36pc, falling from 66 cases in July to 42 in August.
In terms of attack methods, tactical assaults were the most frequently used tactic in August, with 47 incidents, followed by target killings with 46 and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks with 36.
Tactical assaults caused 40 deaths and 44 injuries, while target killings resulted in 50 deaths and 23 injuries. IED attacks claimed 15 lives and injured 50 people.
Balochistan remained the most severely affected region, recording 89 terrorist attacks in August compared with 83 in July, an increase of 7pc.
However, fatalities from terrorist attacks in the province dropped from 162 in July to 76 in August, while injuries fell from 86 to 47.
Security forces’ operations in Balochistan resulted in 118 deaths, including 115 terrorists, compared with 192 deaths, including 189 terrorists, in July.
Mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 54 terrorist attacks in August, up 50pc from 36 in July. Deaths declined from 69 to 44, while injuries fell from 96 to 70.
Security operations in mainland KP resulted in 60 deaths, including 56 terrorists, also lower than the previous month.
The merged districts of KP recorded 52 terrorist attacks in August, up 126pc from 23 in July. Fatalities declined slightly from 36 to 34, while injuries rose from 33 to 59.
Security forces’ actions in the merged districts resulted in 33 deaths, including 32 terrorists, compared with 43 deaths, including 41 terrorists, in July.
Punjab recorded two terrorist attacks, resulting in three deaths and five injuries. Security forces also carried out two notable operations and arrested five suspected terrorists.
Sindh reported two terrorist attacks during August, leaving one person dead. Security forces conducted two operations and arrested two suspected terrorists.
No terrorist attacks were recorded in Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir or Gilgit-Baltistan during the month, according to the PICSS report.
