Andrew Garfield, who portrays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film Artificial, has revealed that the role prompted him to stop using ChatGPT.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Garfield said playing Altman made him uncomfortable about the rapid development of artificial intelligence, leading him to delete his ChatGPT account.
Garfield told host Jimmy Kimmel that the experience reminded him of his reaction to The Social Network, in which he portrayed Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. He said he stopped using Facebook immediately after making the 2010 film and had a similar response after working on Artificial.
“The more you know, the more you realise we’re careening into some very unknown territory,” Garfield said while discussing the potential impact of advancing technology.
The actor also addressed growing concerns surrounding artificial intelligence, particularly its potential effects on employment and the wider economy.
Garfield highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the number of jobs that could be affected by AI and questioned how economies would adapt to ensure ordinary people continue to benefit as the technology develops.
Artificial, directed by Luca Guadagnino, is scheduled to premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival in October.
