An agreement has been signed for the construction of a Rs14 billion water supply line from Dumlottee to Defence and Clifton, with the project expected to provide an additional 10 million gallons per day (MGD) to the two areas.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony attended by Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab and senior officials from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO).
Wahab said the project would help ease water shortages in the city, adding that construction was scheduled to begin next week and was expected to be completed within 12 months.
Karachi’s daily water demand is estimated at around 1,200 MGD, while KWSC currently supplies between 550 and 650 MGD. The shortfall has forced many residents to depend heavily on private water tankers.
The mayor described the project as a joint initiative of the provincial government and KWSC, saying efforts were underway to make Karachi’s water supply system more efficient and sustainable.
Although the additional 10 MGD represents only a portion of the city’s overall water deficit, officials expect the project to provide some immediate relief once completed within the targeted timeframe.
The ceremony was also attended by FWO Head Brig Adnan Akhtar Ali, DHA Administrator Brig Ameer Nawaz Khan, Local Government Secretary Dr Waseem Shamshad, MNA Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, PPP leader Syed Najmi Alam and KWSC CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui.
