Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Fuel Relief Scheme will be rolled out across the country at 11:59pm on September 16, with registration already open nationwide, the government said on Tuesday.
The scheme, announced by the prime minister on Sunday, aims to provide financial relief to owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.
Under the programme, owners of two- and three-wheelers will receive a subsidy of Rs100 per litre on a monthly quota of 20 litres, while owners of vehicles up to 800cc will be eligible for the same subsidy on 30 litres per month.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired a meeting on Tuesday to review preparations for the nationwide implementation of the scheme.
Officials informed the meeting that the programme was already operational in Islamabad and would be extended nationwide at 11:59pm on September 16, 2026.
Dar directed authorities to keep the registration process simple and accessible so that eligible beneficiaries could easily avail themselves of the relief. He also called for effective public awareness campaigns and smooth implementation at petrol stations.
The deputy prime minister urged elected representatives to raise awareness about the scheme and assist citizens with registration. Volunteers from the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme will also be engaged in public outreach and registration activities.
A separate meeting of the National Steering Committee on Fuel Subsidy, chaired by Dar, reviewed arrangements for the nationwide rollout.
The government said registration was open through SMS to 9771, while fuel token redemption would begin at midnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
Dar further directed that payments to participating fuel stations be settled within 24 hours through the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). Provincial authorities were also instructed to complete district-level outreach to ensure the scheme reaches eligible beneficiaries without disruption.
The relief package comes amid a sharp increase in fuel prices linked to renewed hostilities in the Middle East and disruptions to major oil supply routes.
The ongoing crisis around the Strait of Hormuz, amid the US-Iran conflict, has affected global oil flows. Trade through Bab al-Mandab has also come under increasing security threats, further raising concerns over regional energy supplies.
Following the latest price revision, petrol is being sold at Rs380.24 per litre, while high-speed diesel costs Rs409.42 per litre.
The government is currently collecting Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel.
