The latest advance has reportedly exposed divisions among anti-Houthi factions, weaknesses in the Saudi-led military command structure and limited air support. The scale of the Houthi mobilisation was also underestimated, with the group believed to have assembled a large fighting force ahead of the offensive.
The collapse of Saudi-backed forces allowed the Houthis to seize territory as well as a significant quantity of US- and Saudi-supplied weapons that were abandoned during the retreat. The captured equipment could enhance the group’s military capabilities and provide intelligence on the weapons and tactics used by its opponents.
The developments have also raised questions over the level of international support available for any potential counteroffensive. Western governments have reportedly shown reluctance to provide direct military assistance, while Saudi Arabia has sought greater regional backing to contain the Houthi advance.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman travelled to Cairo as Riyadh explored possible Egyptian involvement in Red Sea security operations. Egypt had previously participated in efforts to secure the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Houthis are also seeking political and economic concessions, including easing restrictions on the Hodeidah port and Sanaa airport, compensation related to the war and reduced Saudi support for Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
Control of areas surrounding the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could give the Houthis greater leverage over Red Sea shipping and Saudi oil exports. The strategic importance of the development is further amplified by Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz, creating potential pressure points around two major maritime routes for global energy supplies.
The latest developments have added pressure on Saudi Arabia’s regional strategy and highlighted concerns over the reliability of international security support. The situation has also provided Iran and its regional allies with an opportunity to expand their influence after setbacks involving allied groups in Gaza, Syria and Lebanon.
The Houthi advance has underscored the continuing challenges facing outside powers in Yemen, where prolonged foreign military involvement has repeatedly struggled to produce a decisive outcome.
