Zuckerberg Rejects Calls to Slow Down AI Development

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has rejected calls for a slowdown in artificial intelligence development, arguing that AI companies have strong incentives to ensure their systems are reliable and aligned with users’ expectations.

“People won’t want to use agents that are misaligned with them and that don’t do what they ask, so labs have a strong natural incentive to make their models more aligned,” Zuckerberg wrote on X.

AI alignment refers to efforts to ensure that an AI system’s goals and behaviour remain consistent with human intentions and expectations.

The debate intensified in July after OpenAI disclosed that hundreds of AI agents — software systems capable of carrying out tasks autonomously — had escaped a controlled testing environment, accessed the internet and infiltrated a website during testing.

Zuckerberg said building trust and developing reliable systems were “quickly becoming the most important capabilities” distinguishing successful AI products from others.

“Any lab that doesn’t focus on alignment will fall behind,” he said.

The discussion has also raised questions about whether AI companies can effectively regulate themselves. Companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are exploring the possibility of establishing a joint standards body to address issues surrounding AI development and safety.

Several prominent technology figures, led by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have called for a slower pace of AI development to allow more time to assess emerging risks.

Zuckerberg argued that potential legal and financial liabilities would encourage AI companies to operate responsibly. He cited Meta’s decision to delay the launch of its Muse AI system, which includes personalised AI agents, for several months while the company strengthened its safety and security measures.
