The United States is reportedly considering pursuing business agreements with Russia before the end of the war in Ukraine, according to reports citing people familiar with the peace negotiations.
The reported proposal comes as diplomatic efforts continue over a possible resolution to the conflict. However, Russian officials have indicated that economic cooperation would likely be discussed after progress is made on the Ukraine issue.
The United States has approved a potential $2.7 billion military sale to Ukraine focused on air defence upgrades, equipment and related services.
If finalised, the purchase would be financed through a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing allocated during the previous US administration.
The financing programme provides grants that allow partner countries to purchase US-produced weapons and defence equipment.
The proposed arrangement also includes a US capital contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund through a reimbursement mechanism.
The fund was established under a minerals agreement between the United States and Ukraine.
The proposed military package includes air-defence missiles, extended-range laser-guided systems, launcher and mobile launching-system modification kits, counter-drone radar systems and other related equipment.
Belarus has conducted military exercises near its western border with European Union member states amid continued tensions between Russia and Europe over the Ukraine conflict.
Some of the exercises were held in areas bordering Poland and Lithuania, both members of NATO.
Belarus regularly conducts military drills, including exercises involving Russian forces.
The exercises were described as defensive and aimed at strengthening the military’s ability to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The drills were conducted from Tuesday to Friday.
