The United States has issued fresh security warnings for Americans in the Middle East, saying the regional security situation remains volatile and could face an unforeseen escalation as Washington considers its next steps in the conflict with Iran.
US diplomatic missions in the region advised Americans to remain highly vigilant and prepare for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions. Citizens outside the region were also advised to seriously reconsider travel to and through the Middle East.
The warnings cited heightened tensions and the possibility of a rapid escalation of the ongoing military conflict in the region. They also referred to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia, including civilian airports.
The US president shortened a weekend stay at Camp David and returned to the White House, adding to uncertainty over Washington’s next move. The administration has not provided a detailed explanation for the change in schedule.
The US president has indicated that a major decision is under consideration regarding whether to intensify military action against Iran or pursue another course. He has also left open the possibility of talks with Iran’s president, who is expected to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The United States has also maintained that the Houthis have agreed not to target American forces, although tensions involving the group and regional military operations remain a concern.
Meanwhile, Iran has warned against any major new attack by the United States or its allies, saying it had information that preparations for such an assault were under way.
Iranian military authorities said any new attack would trigger sustained retaliation against US bases and interests in the region. They also warned that countries supporting or assisting the United States could be considered parties to the conflict. No further details were provided about the alleged preparations.
Pakistan is preparing to emphasise dialogue, diplomacy, restraint and peaceful dispute resolution during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise.
Pakistan’s delegation is expected to present the country’s position on the evolving regional and international security situation while highlighting efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
Pakistan also plans to stress the importance of the UN Charter, multilateralism, conflict prevention and international cooperation during the General Assembly meetings.
