Jordan’s King Says Regional Security and Stability Depend on Establishing a Palestinian State

Jordan’s King Abdullah II said on Monday that lasting security and stability in the Middle East would remain unattainable unless the Palestinian people’s right to an independent homeland is fulfilled.

Speaking at the opening session of Jordan’s parliament, the king reiterated his country’s position that regional peace depends on recognising Palestinian rights and securing their right to statehood.

He said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continued despite international calls for an end to Israeli actions. He also condemned ongoing attacks in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, describing Israel’s expansionist ambitions as a major threat to the region’s future.

Jordan, which shares borders with Israel and the occupied West Bank, has long supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The country signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.

The remarks came days after Israel held a legislative election in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s party secured the highest number of votes but failed to win a parliamentary majority.

The speech also came amid renewed concerns about a possible escalation in the wider Middle East, as Iran warned it would retaliate if the United States and Israel launched further strikes against it.
