Suzuki has unveiled its first electric kei car, the e-Sky, featuring a projected driving range of 310 kilometres and 50kW DC fast-charging capability.
The compact battery-electric vehicle has been developed for Japan’s urban mobility market, with Suzuki focusing on low weight, energy efficiency and everyday practicality. The e-Sky is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in November.
The EV is powered by a 26kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, with claimed energy consumption of around 12km per kWh.
Suzuki has developed a dedicated lightweight platform for the electric kei car rather than adapting an existing combustion-engine architecture. The battery is positioned beneath the floor to improve packaging and aerodynamics while maintaining the vehicle’s compact design.
The e-Sky is also equipped with Suzuki’s first internally developed e-axle drive system, designed primarily for efficient city driving rather than high performance.
Fast charging
The e-Sky supports DC fast charging at up to 50kW, allowing the battery to reach 80 per cent capacity in about 25 minutes, according to Suzuki. A full charge takes around eight hours using a 3kW AC charger and about 4.5 hours with a 6kW charger.
The EV also features a heat pump, one-pedal driving and bidirectional charging.
Inside, the vehicle comes with a digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen, along with features such as a heated steering wheel and electronic parking brake.
Suzuki has incorporated additional storage solutions, including a two-level centre console and a passenger-side tray with an integrated cup holder.
The company has not yet disclosed the e-Sky’s price but said affordability was a key consideration during development. While the model is primarily aimed at the Japanese market, Suzuki has designed it with potential international markets in mind, although no export plans have been confirmed.
