Vance, 42, is among the prominent Republican figures affected by the results. He actively campaigned alongside Trump in key battleground states, making his political position closely linked to the president’s performance.
However, following the electoral defeat, Vance attempted to distance himself from the administration’s unpopular war with Iran, blaming the conflict for the Republican Party’s poor performance in a lengthy statement posted on social media platform X.
Political analysts believe that separating himself from Trump could prove difficult, given his close association with the president throughout the election campaign.
James Lindsay of the Council on Foreign Relations noted that sitting vice presidents have historically faced difficulties in securing presidential victories.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also emerged as a possible contender for the 2028 Republican nomination. Although Rubio, 55, maintained a relatively low profile during the midterm campaign, his association with the Trump administration and its Iran policy could present political challenges.
Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has become more outspoken following the Republican defeat. DeSantis, 48, described the Democratic victories as a major political shock and highlighted Florida as a state where Republicans managed to resist the Democratic gains.
Texas Senator Ted Cruz, 55, has also left open the possibility of another presidential campaign. However, Democratic victories in the Texas Senate and gubernatorial races could affect his political standing.
The Democratic Party has emerged from the midterm elections with renewed confidence, as several potential presidential candidates have strengthened their political positions.
Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff’s re-election victory has generated speculation about a possible presidential campaign in 2028. The 39-year-old politician has gained national attention for his public criticism of Trump and his growing appeal among younger voters.
Although Ossoff has said he has no interest in running for president, his decisive election victory and strong campaign performance have strengthened his position within the Democratic Party.
Former vice president Kamala Harris, 62, had previously been considered a leading candidate for the Democratic nomination. However, some party members are reportedly interested in selecting a candidate without a previous presidential election defeat.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, 53, has also strengthened his position after securing re-election in the key battleground state. Shapiro was among the candidates considered by Harris as a potential running mate during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Another possible contender is California Governor Gavin Newsom, 59, who has frequently criticised Trump’s policies and emerged as one of his prominent political opponents. However, Newsom could face challenges as Democrats increasingly look towards younger political leadership.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is also being discussed as a potential candidate. The 36-year-old progressive politician previously indicated that she was considering a presidential bid, raising questions about the prospects of a Latina candidate in the US presidential race.
Other potential Democratic contenders include former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Arizona Senator and former astronaut Mark Kelly.
With the 2028 presidential election approaching, the midterm results have intensified political competition within both parties, setting the stage for a potentially competitive nomination process.
