Turkiye has expressed readiness to help meet Saudi Arabia’s military requirements amid ongoing attacks targeting the kingdom’s territory and sovereignty.
Under a recently signed joint defence agreement, an armed attack on any one of the three participating countries is to be treated as an attack on all members of the pact.
Saudi Arabia has faced repeated attacks since Yemen’s Houthi movement announced a naval blockade against the kingdom in July. The attacks have targeted Saudi cities, energy infrastructure and shipping routes, raising concerns over global oil supplies and the Red Sea trade route.
The disruption has added pressure to international energy and shipping markets, particularly as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains affected.
Saudi Arabia has also sought military assistance amid the escalating conflict, while efforts continue to prevent the kingdom from being drawn directly into the wider US-Iran confrontation.
Turkiye has said Saudi Arabia does not want to become involved in the conflict and has called for diplomatic efforts to end the fighting. Several proposals have reportedly been presented to the parties involved, with concerns growing over the economic impact of the prolonged crisis.
Turkiye, which has one of the largest military forces within NATO, has previously said its defence agreement with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia could be expanded and was not intended to replace existing alliances.
Earlier, Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed responsibility for missile and drone attacks targeting what it described as sensitive sites in Riyadh. The attacks came after flames and a large plume of smoke were reported near the Saudi capital’s main airport.
Turkiye has condemned the attacks and called for an immediate end to the violence.
