CCTV footage of the incident shows a woman running down a staircase while carrying a dumbbell before confronting another woman and striking her with it.
The footage also captures two people dressed in what appear to be police uniforms holding back the woman who was being attacked. Shortly afterwards, a man comes upstairs and engages in an argument with the woman carrying the dumbbell.
The woman and the man being assaulted eventually manage to enter what appears to be their apartment. The woman with the dumbbell and another man then approach the door, repeatedly banging on it while allegedly using abusive language.
Towards the end of the footage, a man dressed in a shalwar kameez is seen taking a weapon from one of the uniformed individuals and using it to damage the CCTV camera.
Following the circulation of the footage on social media, South DIG Syed Asad Raza told that he had ordered the investigating officer to examine the matter impartially and strictly on merit. He said both parties had submitted allegations against each other.
Separately, an FIR filed at Darakhshan police station at 1:40am on Aug 21 provides a different account of the incident. The case was registered on the complaint of a woman, according to a copy of the FIR available with Dawn.
The FIR initially invoked sections 354, 504, 506, 337-A(i), 382 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code. These provisions relate to assaulting a woman, intentional insult, criminal intimidation, causing injury, theft involving preparation for causing hurt or restraint, and acts committed by multiple persons in furtherance of a common intention.
According to the complainant, she lived on the fourth floor of the apartment building, while a man, his sister and their mother occupied the third floor. She alleged that the three came to her apartment and began kicking the door following a dispute over parking.
The woman claimed that the trio verbally abused her and, after she opened the door, assaulted and threatened her.
The FIR stated that police subsequently arrived and, acting on the complainant’s statement, detained the brother and sister, while their mother managed to leave the scene.
The complainant further alleged that the other party took her gold earring and two rings.
However, DIG Raza said the provision relating to the alleged theft of the jewellery had since been removed from the FIR, as the incident appeared to primarily involve an assault.
