The statement was made during a meeting in Islamabad, where participants also discussed the overall political situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the law and order situation and other matters of mutual interest.
The meeting was attended by Kashmir Affairs Minister Engineer Amir Muqam and Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated that the federal government would continue its efforts to promote development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and ensure the welfare of its people, according to the statement.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which governs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has remained at odds with the federal government over several issues, including the allocation of funds and military operations in the province.
The provincial ruling party has also repeatedly called for the release of its founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, who has remained incarcerated since 2023.
PTI has organised several protests over the issue and accused the federal government, as well as the Punjab and Sindh administrations, of suppressing its political activities and mobilisation campaigns.
On Monday, a confrontation with law enforcement officials disrupted KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi’s visit to Lahore. Afridi alleged that authorities had abducted him and later left him by the roadside. The provincial government, however, rejected the allegation.
Afridi had travelled to Lahore to mobilise PTI supporters ahead of the party’s planned protest march towards Islamabad on September 27.
