Punjab has launched a body-worn camera initiative for police personnel in Lahore as part of efforts to improve accountability, enhance public safety and modernise law enforcement.
The project is being introduced initially in Lahore on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, with trained police officials prepared to use the cameras during field operations. Installation of docking stations at police stations has also begun.
The cameras will be worn by personnel from the Punjab Police, Punjab Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force and traffic wardens while performing their duties. They will be connected to Smart Safe City systems operating in 43 cities across the province, enabling live monitoring through district Safe City control rooms.
The devices are equipped with facial-recognition technology that can assist in identifying suspects and automatically detecting vehicle number plates. They can also issue immediate alerts in the event of potential threats or emergencies.
In addition to video and audio recording, the cameras support photography and calling functions. Their built-in storage allows officers to record and retain footage throughout their shifts.
After completing their duties, officers will be required to return the devices to designated docking stations. The recorded data will then be automatically transferred from the cameras and securely stored.
The equipment also includes a push-to-talk feature, allowing officers to communicate directly with control rooms, as well as an SOS button for sending emergency alerts.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the system would strengthen police oversight and help curb corruption. She said the ultimate measure of the initiative’s success would be whether it creates a greater sense of security among citizens, particularly vulnerable groups.
The chief minister added that protecting the lives and property of every citizen across Punjab remained the government’s primary responsibility.
