Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev has arrived in Pakistan for a four-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.
According to an official statement, Kolokoltsev is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi. The visit marks the first time a Russian interior minister has travelled to Pakistan.
Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry received the Russian minister upon his arrival in Islamabad.
During his stay, Kolokoltsev is scheduled to participate in key discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest. He is also expected to hold important meetings with Pakistan’s leadership.
In January, Russian President Vladimir Putin described Moscow’s relations with Islamabad as mutually beneficial, reaffirming the two countries’ close cooperation.
Putin highlighted Pakistan’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), describing Russia-Pakistan relations as beneficial to both sides.
In July, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk also described Pakistan and Russia as natural allies, emphasising Islamabad’s importance as a strategic partner in the economic and energy sectors.
Pakistan and Russia have expanded economic cooperation in recent years, particularly in the energy sector, as both countries seek to address their respective economic and energy needs.
Following Western sanctions imposed on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict, Russia sought to diversify its energy export markets. Meanwhile, Pakistan explored more affordable fuel supplies to reduce its import costs and ease pressure on its economy.
Bilateral energy cooperation gained momentum in 2023 when Pakistan began importing Russian crude oil, marking a significant development in economic relations between the two countries.
The Russian interior minister’s visit is expected to provide another opportunity to strengthen diplomatic engagement and explore avenues for further cooperation.
