Police in Islamabad have arrested several PTI workers under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code following a complaint filed by a police official.
The charges include attempted murder, criminal intimidation involving threats of death or serious injury, rioting with deadly weapons, unlawful assembly, assault or use of force against a public servant, and obstructing a public servant in the discharge of official duties.
Police said they received information that PTI workers were holding a meeting at a property office in the E-16 area in connection with preparations for the September 27 protest. A police team was subsequently formed to conduct a raid and make arrests.
According to the police, the workers assaulted members of the police team during the raid, tore their uniforms and held them hostage. The allegations remain part of the case proceedings.
Authorities have also intensified preparations to manage the planned nationwide protest. A security meeting was held at the Central Police Office in Islamabad to review arrangements and develop measures to prevent disruption.
Police officials discussed security plans, intelligence gathering and monitoring of activities linked to the planned demonstration.
Authorities are also collecting information about preparations for the protest, including activities of political leaders, workers and supporters. Surveillance has been increased at guest houses, inns, bus terminals and other locations that could be used to arrange food, water, accommodation and transportation for protesters.
Local police and intelligence units have been directed to monitor relevant activities and gather information about individuals involved in the planned demonstration. Security personnel have also increased surveillance around locations associated with political workers and supporters as part of the preparations for the protest.
