The proposed conversion of a 76-metre triumphal arch in Washington into a military facility has been linked to national security concerns, although no specific threats have been identified.
The plan is part of a broader effort to reshape Washington, including changes to major public and historic sites. Preservation groups and others have criticised several of the proposed projects, warning that they could alter the character of important landmarks.
Under the plan, the arch would be equipped to support the rapid deployment and storage of large numbers of drones. The proposal also includes positions for snipers on the roof and surrounding plaza, along with storage facilities for ammunition.
Aviation authorities have determined that the structure would not pose a hazard to aircraft, clearing a key regulatory hurdle. The arch is also expected to feature an eternal flame and has been proposed as part of celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary.
However, aviation experts have raised safety concerns because of the structure’s proximity to Reagan Washington National Airport.
Veterans have also challenged the project, arguing that the proposed arch could affect the historic view between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
