The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has launched a train march from Karachi towards Islamabad as part of its ongoing campaign against the petroleum levy.
The march is scheduled to pass through Hyderabad, Landhi, Nawabshah, Rohri and Sukkur before continuing towards Islamabad. Supporters are expected to join the protest at different points along the route.
The party has described the campaign as an effort to press the government for relief for low-income households and to reduce the financial burden caused by high fuel prices.
The JI is demanding the withdrawal of the petroleum levy, arguing that its removal would reduce petrol prices and provide relief to consumers.
The party has also criticised rising prices of groceries and other essential commodities, raising concerns over what it describes as excessive influence and profiteering in the petroleum, wheat and sugar sectors.
The protest movement has continued for more than a month, with demonstrations and sit-ins being held in several cities across the country, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpur Khas, Larkana, Naushahro Feroze, Rawalpindi, Gujrat and various cities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The party has urged citizens to participate in street protests rather than limiting their response to social media campaigns.
The JI has warned that the protests could intensify if the petroleum levy remains in place and has called for immediate government action to address its demands.
The train march is scheduled to reach Rohri and Sukkur, where a public rally is planned in the evening. The protesters are expected to leave for Multan on Monday as the march continues towards Islamabad.
